What makes parasailing different to parachuting?

Para-gliding refers to flying above the ground using an attached harness and small sail. This harness allows you fly. It will keep you safe when you are falling through the sky.

You don't need any equipment to fly. You simply attach yourself to the sail. Then you go off. The sail will be pushed against the wind as you ascend in altitude. This allows it to lift you.

You continue moving forward as you glide along the ground. Your momentum keeps you moving forward until you reach a cable's end. The cable ends and you are free to let go of your grip, and then you fall back to Earth.

How To

How can I get started in Base Jumping

Base jumping (also known as free-fall parachuting) is a sport where participants jump from fixed objects (usually cliffs), such as bridges, towers, buildings, etc., without any equipment attached to them. To safely land, the participant jumps from the object. It's similar to skydiving but you don’t have to wear a parachute or hold your breath as you wait to open it.

A wingsuit-type base jumper, is the most commonly used. A wingsuit is made of two pieces of fabric sewn together. One piece covers the chest and arms, and the second piece covers the legs. The boots enable the jumper to stand upright while in flight. Jumpers tend to pull their feet up tight during descent. This causes the material that covers the legs to gather and form a large volume of air under the jumper. When this air pocket becomes big enough, the jumper opens his/her parachute and lands safely.

Some base jumpers use powered suits to help propel themselves through the air faster. Two main components of powered suits are a backpack with batteries and a pack that can be worn underneath the jumper's clothing. These small rockets fire small jets of hot-gas at high speeds. This creates thrust that propels the leaper forward. These suits are loud and heavy, however.

BASE jumping is not for everyone. If you decide to learn how to BASE jump, make sure you understand the risks involved. You could fall off a cliff or hit an obstacle upside-down or head-on. Or you could collide with another jumper. Even though BASE jumping is not always dangerous, it can be very dangerous when done incorrectly. To avoid injury, check out the following safety tips before attempting to BASE jump.

You can start by learning BASE jumping skills on a smaller hill. Always take time to familiarize yourself with the terrain before jumping onto a larger hill. Pay attention to weather conditions. Try to jump when the wind isn't blowing in your face. Also, avoid foggy skies. If you see more than 10 feet ahead of yourself, then you might need wait until the cloud clears. Third, make sure you have the right gear. You should have a helmet, goggles and gloves as well as a complete suit including a harness. Fourth, be sure to have a plan. Before leaving the ground, ask someone to follow you if something goes wrong. Finally, never jump alone. Always have someone else watching over you.
