Mountain Bike Project: Why the East Coast is better

A mountain bike project is not an easy task. Planning, approvals, evaluations are all required for this project. It can also have an impact on the tourist market. This project will make mountain biking more mainstream. Before you begin, it is important that you check the permit requirements.

After community members raised concerns about the possibility of developing a Mountain Bike Facility, Warburton MTB projects was founded. Parks Victoria awarded a Healthy Parks, Healthy People grant to the project. A feasibility study was done by Warburton.

To create the trail, Rhett and Walters memorial trail committees worked together with Parks and Recreation Department. The committee sought to find the best location for the trail, while minimising the impact on the environment. The Parks and Recreation Department began to work with the committee in February 1997.

On October 30, 1999, the Rhett Walters Memorial Mountain Bike Trail opened. The trail was constructed to avoid the Bear Creek drainage. This was done to minimize the impact on the environment and ensure that the trail could be used for all kinds of mountain bike riders.


The trail is surrounded Yarra Ranges National Park, state forest, and Warburton. To ensure safety, the trails are spread across many areas.

Over two years have passed since the Warburton MTB Project was initiated. Over twenty-two people supported the project at the public hearing that was held on December 8. The public hearing was well attended and the Parks and Recreation Commission approved a proposal for the project's development. The Commission then held a public hearing to determine whether to recommend the project for endorsement.

In the end, the Commission did not recommend the project for endorsement. The Memorial Committee requested that a planning committee prepare a revised plan which would be presented to Commission. This plan would include an evaluation of the impact on the local economy and tourism market. The committee will also be able to evaluate and recommend potential trail sites.

The International Mountain Bike Association (IMBA), maintains the MTB Project. It is a database of mountain biking trails. Adventure Projects, which creates authentic communities for outdoor activities, created the database. The website, virtual rides, photos, and database are all part of the project.
